Shunts are a type of resistor and are most often used in DC circuits much like a Current Transformer in an AC circuit. Current flowing through them generates heat, so remember to mount them in a vertical position to enable easy cooling from free flowing air. Ideally, the shunt is connected in the grounded side of the circuit. Also, try to mount it close to the instrument that will be reading its output. The shorter the distance, the greater the accuracy since the drop in voltage will be less.

The output from these shunts is commonly 50mVdc, but others are available.
